Aravon Academics

We aim to instill in the children a love of learning, to enable them to develop into confident and adaptable individuals, and to foster self-reliance, motivation and imagination.

We do this in a happy family-type atmosphere, in small classes - typically between 16 and 20 pupils - with a dedicated staff and an extended and enhanced school day.

Our Curriculum
We provide a balanced structured curriculum with clear progression. We meet the new National Primary School Curriculum in depth, to which we add an information technology programme, the early introduction of a modern language, and a creative arts programme.

Particular attention is paid to English, Mathematics, and Irish and there is a strong emphasis on well-written and well-presented work.

Learning is developmental in nature and existing knowledge and experience form the basis for future learning. A child’s natural curiosity and sense of wonder is considered a primary motivating factor in learning and each child is encouraged to become an active agent in his or her own learning.

As the development of learning moves from the concrete to the abstract the children are encouraged to develop abstract and creative thinking skills in addition to being able to question, discuss, evaluate and hypothesize.

Pupils are taught in a variety of ways

Teachers are child-centred and adopt a flexible approach, generally using a ‘whole class’ approach, but also teaching smaller groups and individuals as appropriate.

They attach great importance to developing good relationships with their pupils in order to promote an environment in which pupils feel secure enough to ask questions and request help if necessary.

In curriculum planning and implementation the individual needs of both able pupils and those with special educational needs are fully acknowledged, with all pupils being encouraged to develop at a pace appropriate to their abilities.

In addition to lessons, Homework, or Prep, is considered an essential parts of the child's learning activities. At Aravon children are encouraged to develop independence and responsibility in their attitude to their work and its organisation.

Your role as a parent

Parents are encouraged to play an active role in their children's learning process by providing them with a quiet workplace at home, hearing them read and by being encouraging and supportive of it.

To complement classroom teaching we provide additional experiences and further stimulation, such as visiting places of educational and cultural interest or by inviting guest speakers to give presentations or run workshops, while a programme of overseas residential visits is organised for the senior children to foster independence and to further enrich the learning experience.

Monitoring progress

Each pupil’s progress is carefully monitored, with work being marked constructively and rewarding effort as well as achievement.

Records of achievement, effort and behaviour are maintained as the  children are continuously assessed with comprehensive written reports being provided each term and parent teacher meetings regularly scheduled.

Our academic standards are high and we are justifiably proud of our record, with many Scholarships being earned for entry into secondary schools, where Aravon past pupils traditionally perform to a very high standard and are regular winners of form prizes.

Extra curricular

We have a vast array of extra-curricular activities available to our children. These activities are incorporated into the school day so that they don't encroach on the children's valuable time at home. Read about the extra curricular activities offered at Aravon.
