About Aravon about Aravon  History

Aravon GardenAravon School is Ireland’s oldest Preparatory (Prep) School. It was established in 1862 by Thomas Courtney. The school stood on land formerly belonging to Novara House. The name Aravon is a reversal of Novara.

For the first 50 years of its existence it was a school which accepted boys up to the age of 18. The rugby team achieved a very good reputation and was recognised as one of the best school teams around Dublin. The standard of education was also very high and good results were commonplace.

In 1912 the headmaster Mr R.H, Bookey decided to reorganise the school on entirely ‘Junior School’ lines. By 1917 the older boys had disappeared.  During the ensuing years the school continued to develop and expand. In 1927 the headmaster Mr Arthur Craig, an old boy of the school, decided to invite each Old Boy, and each boy as he left the school, to add a small oak Aravon School Interiorpanel, engraved with his name and dates at Aravon and this tradition continued until 1966. The panels are still in the school and are a testament to the children who have gone before the present generation.

In 1962 the Centenary celebrations took place including the upgrading of many of the facilities. The development of the school continued and in 1984 Aravon moved to its present location on Ferndale Road with its beautiful setting and wonderful grounds.

There it has gone from strength to strength. It continues to give the children the opportunity to fulfil their potential in all areas of school life.

As Aravon nears its 150th anniversary in 2012 the ethos of the school remains as the founders envisaged and it is indeed a very special place for children to grow, learn and develop.
